Neuron Global Selected by Money Management Institute for Annual Conference
BOSTON – March 19, 2008 – Information services company Neuron Global partnered with the Money Management Institute (MMI) in relaying important messages regarding possible solutions to the problems facing today’s retirees. Neuron Global provided the integrated report that presents the insights of Alicia H. Munnell, the Peter F. Drucker Professor of Management Sciences at Boston College and Director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. as she addressed the problem of securing retirement income in the near future during MMI’s annual conference in Boston.
The situation is far from reassuring, Munnell reports, mainly because Americans do not save money voluntarily and the institutions that have compensated for that in the past, Social Security and defined-benefit retirement plans (pensions) are either shrinking or being phased out. “The savings mechanisms we have now are not going to produce enough income when we get to retirement,” she told her audience.
Munnell outlined the actions that individuals, businesses, and the government could take to ameliorate the troubled state of US social security. “My personal view,” she said, “is that social security should not be cut any further, because it is already going down under the current law. We have to pay more in payroll taxes or take the state tax to that phase.” In the absence of pensions from employers, “We should make the 401(k) plans work as best as we can, and that means automatic everything. We should educate people to use 401(k) plans as intelligently as possible.”
The considerations that are important to the process of conceptualizing a solution were discussed during the question-and-answer section of the address. “We need another savings mechanism,” she stated, “some type of individual account with pooled investment and universal coverage, and money coming out as an annuity because this giving of lump sums at retirement is going to be a disaster. Politically, it is not going to happen in the short term, because we have not seen a group of people really suffer yet.”
The Money Management Institute (MMI) is the national organization for the managed solutions industry, representing portfolio manager firms and sponsors of investment consulting programs. It was organized in 1997 to serve as a forum for the industries leaders to address common concerns, discuss industry issues and work together to better serve investors. The Institute is the leading advocate for these industries on regulatory and legislative issues.
